Music is useful as more than just entertainment or a distraction, and its prevalence throughout history in all parts of the world indicates its fundamental importance in human civilisations. The power of music to affect our emotions and state of mind has long been known, and is utilised by music artists, filmmakers and advertisers.
How Does Music Make Us Feel?
Music has been demonstrated to powerfully affect emotions, as well as alter people's perceptions when looking at images or receiving information. The ability of major chords to induce feelings of happiness and minor chords to produce sadness, for example, is seen in many diverse musical forms in different cultures, indicating that these associations are more than simply arbitrary.
One important aspect of music underlying its emotional resonance is the bodily movements it suggests, which may conjure images of pleasant activities or anxiety.
Benefits Of Learning A Musical Instrument
As well as responding to recorded or live music, creating music yourself by taking up an instrument can also be extremely therapeutic. Research has shown that learning an instrument stimulates different parts of the brain that are important for development, and different instruments can achieve widely differing results in terms of the emotions they are able to convey - from the uplifting notes of trumpets to the melancholy strings of violins.

Louis Armstrong is a respected figure not only in the world of jazz, but in American and 20th century music history in general. Many people continue to be inspired by the incredible trumpet player and singer, and even use this inspiration to dabble with music instruments in diverse genres.
Louis Armstrong biography
Daniel Louis Armstrong – also known as Satchmo – was the first jazz soloist to achieve widespread fame and recognition inside as well as outside the jazz genre, with his vocal style and trumpet playing defining the sound of jazz from the 1920s onwards. Born in New Orleans in 1901, Armstrong was a major force in the growing popularity of jazz in the early to mid 20th century, particularly through cornerstones such as his Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings.
Legacy and influence
Louis Armstrong's strong personality contributed to his fame and influence, which continues to be seen in diverse musical forms today. His talent for melodic improvisation has inspired generations of musicians, not only fellow trumpet players, and his distinctive scat singing style has been praised by successors such as Duke Ellington and Bing Crosby.
Hits and awards
Armstrong wrote many chart topping hits including What a Wonderful World and When the Saints Go Marching in. Throughout his career Armstrong became the proud recipient of one Grammy Award in 1965, as well as being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Grammy Hall of Fame, as well as being awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1972.
